1.5.2 Ethical Moral and Cultural Issues.
Computers in the workplace
Manufacturing
Automation of manufacturing processes removes the need for manual (cheap) labour
Skilled engineers required to maintain systems (upskilling)
This can be expensive
The use of robotics in manufacturing makes it much safer for the workers since they are exposed to much less risk.
Some people believe that the use of automation removes the individuality of the manufactured products.
The use of automated manufacturing has plenty of benefit for the company since robotic machines can work for longer since they don't require breaks for anything other than maintenance. They also work faster and to a higher degree of quality.
The removal of manual labourers can lead to wide spread unemployment
By 2025, up to a quarter of jobs will be replaced by either smart software or robots.
Real-Time controlling
Removes the need for manual labour e.g.Turning on systems, which replaces workers which could lead to unemployment.
Allows activation for irrigation, heating or ventilation systems for Greenhouses or vineyards.
Replaces employees
This means that robots and machines will replace real people therefore creating unemployment through the workplace
This is arguably more beneficial to companies as they save money in the long-term through automated customer service
However it could be much harder and confusing for older generations with little experience in technology
Computer systems are very intelligent and can quickly find out and help you will any worries
However, if you have a very specific question it may not have the knowledge to give an answer however a human would at least be able to explain where they can find an answer or research it
Could be much easier and faster if you are experienced with computers
Ease of Use
Most fast food restaurants will use touch screen ordering systems so that customers can quickly order and pay for their food
This can also optimise restaurant space as people could order from an app or a touch screen system which takes up far less space than a working space for an actual person
These systems can go down and make businesses be overloaded with customers.
This down-time can be very negative for businesses as they can lose profit and costumers
This down-time may be the result of mechanical failure, which would be very expensive to repair
Acceleration of scientific tasks
Computers can solve complex equations significantly faster than humans, making scientific research faster.
Computers can be used to generate images of objects immensely far away in space (digital telescopes) - one example is the image of the black hole.
Quantum computers are constantly performing calculations much faster than any other thing humans have invented
Automatic decision making
stock market
more people face unemployment as machines are replacing workers
While it does cause a rise in the rat of unemployment, automation in some industries reduces the likelihood of workplace accidents
80 - 90% of all stock market trades are already executed by machines
Automating decision making
decisions, error detection and correction are offloaded to a machine
removes the need for manual labour
make decisions without involving any humans
Variables can be considered for optimised decision-making
