Chemical Bonding - Coggle Diagram
Chemical Bonding
Can be drawn using
-
Lewis dot diagrams
By first
- Writing the element symbols with their valence electrons around the element symbol (starting: left, right, top, bottom, repeat).
-
Then
- Using (an) arrow(s), show the transfer of electrons
-
Finally
- Show the completed exchange of electrons of both atoms in a second drawing. Put square brackets around each atom with their respective charges in the top-right corner outside the brackets.

However
The arrangement of valence electrons can be altered to make the Lewis diagram neater and easier to draw.
By first
- Finding the bonding capacities of the atoms.
-
Then
- Place the atom with the highest bonding capacity in the "center" with the other atoms around the "central" atom (if Carbon is present, then Carbon will always a central atom)
-
Next
- Add up all the valence electrons available.
