Work & Energy
Potential Energy
-
MGH (M= Mass, G= gravity, H= Height)
-
Kinetic Energy
-
1/2 mv^2 (M= Mass, V= Velocity)
-
When you rub your hands together, you transfer kinetic energy into thermal
When an object is moving, the energy is called kinetic energy
-
-
When the energy is transferred to another substance, it is called heat
-
Some objects store their energy, and the stored energy is called potential energy
Humans and animals of all sort are able to do work because of the chemical energy in the food we eat
As plants and animals grow, they store chemical energy
-
-
In all situations, whenever work is done on an object, there is a change in the object's energy
-
-
Energy is only transferred to another object when it is transferred from one energy to another energy
When friction does it's work, the energy is transferred into thermal energy
When friction does it's work, most of the kinetic energy is transferred into thermal energy
As energy is transferred into mechanical energy, some thermal energy will also be produced
-
{work in joules} = {force in newtons} x {distance in meters} or you can write this equation as W= FD
For example, if Jennifer pushes a box with a force of 150 N and the box moves 3.0m....
W= FD
= 150N x 3.0M
=450 J
-
If Jennifer's box has the weight of 25kg, and she needs to move it 2.0m in the air you can still use the equation w=fd.
Fg = mg
= {245N} {9.8N/kg}
= 245N
W=FD
= {245 N} { 2.0m}
= 490 J
Some forms of energy can be electrical, chemical, thermal, sound, mechanical and much more.
