Cambyses 530 - 522
Herodotus' bad depiction
-
killed the Apis Bull, an appearance of the egyptian god Ptah, and then ridiculed the priests for worshipping a god with flesh and blood
murdered his brother smerdis after dreaming that he would take his throne, and then killed his sister wife for bringing it up
-
biased as referred to ancient egyptian sources from priests that didn't like him so negatively biased
-
Death
two magi brothers launched a rebellion him in persia, one of these brothers pretended to be Smerdis
cambyses heard this and immediately mounted his horse, but an exposes blade pierced him in the thigh - in the same place he had struck the Apis bull
advisors thought the fake Smerdis was real, and so Cambyses died (of gangrene) with the country in turmoil
Egypt
battle of pelusium
-
-
50,000 egyptians dead, 7000 persians
compromise
cambyses tried to make an agreement with the egyptians, but they killed his herald
because of this, he besieged memphis and the egyptians, libyans and cyrene surrender
cambyses didn't kill the egyptian king Psammetichus at first, but then he plotted against him, so was killed
More Campaigns
ammonia
A force of 50,000 men were sent into the desert to attack the ammonians but were apparently killed and buried in a sandstorm
ethiopia
Cambyses led this campaign but did not plan adequate supplies. His army was first forced to eat pack animals, and then resorted to cannibalism. Cambyses gave up and returned to Memphis
Archeology
Archaeological remains show a temple in Memphis where the embalmed bodies of the dead Apis Bulls were kept
an inscription here suggest that Cambyses had ensured that this bull had been embalmed and buried with full ceremonies and was thus respectful of local religious traditions.
