Renal Physiology
Nephron
LOH
Distal Tubule
a-intercalated cells
H+ ATPase
Excretion of titratable acid
some reabsorption of ions
fluid hyposmotic
Proximal tubule
NHE Antiport
site of drug secretion (e.g. penecillin)
Glomerulus
Juxtaglomerular Apparatus
Granular Cells (Juxtaglomerular Cells): located behind the macula densa of the DCT; secretes RENIN - renin is released upon SNS stimulation of beta1 receptors
where thick ascending limb/early DCT passes between afferent and efferent arteriole
Three cell types: macula densa, mesangial cells, granular cells
Mesangial cells: between capillary loops; contracts in response to angiotensin II
Macula Densa - part of the early DCT, detects how much fluid is passing through the nephron, and controls blood flow through glomerular capillaries
Bonus: Interstitial Cells: Secretes EPO
Collecting Duct
Targeted by 2 hormones:ADH (vasopressin and aldosterone)
Water permeability controlled by ADH
Site where final concentration of urine is adjusted; hyposmotic or hyperosmotic
