The Digestive system
Enzymes
-
-
Protease
Protease is released form the Salivary Glands and the pancreas and breakdowns carbohydrates into simple sugars
Intestine
Once the food reaches the small intestine protease and lipase from the pancreas and bile from the liver which then reacts with the food to create fatty acids and glycerol if they are lipids
-
Lock and Key Theory
Lock and key theory is a theory to explain how enzymes break down starches or different food. Also the shape of the activation site of the enzyme is exclusive to that substrate
-
Stomach
Once the food reaches the stomach the protease which are made in the stomach and pancreas begin to break down proteins into amino acids.
Liver
The Bile is produces from the liver and is stored in the gall bladder. It is used to increase the surface area of fats to make it so that the lipase can break them down faster
The process starts when saliva from the mouth begin to break down the carbohydrates into simple sugars
For enzymes to keep working at their best they need to be kept at an optimum temperature and ph otherwise they would denature so the substrate that would normally fit for the chemical reaction to happen would no longer work.
Digestion is where large insoluble molecules are broken down into smaller soluble ones that can then be absorbed through the bloodstream
