Deaf Culture CH 3
The Manual Alphabet
Published charts showing fingerspelled handshapes in books came into existence as early as 1620 when Spanish monks used fingerspelling to teach Deaf students reading & Writing
Fingerspelling is part of ASL with 26 handshapes that correspond to the 26 letters of the English alphabet
As young as 13 months, Deaf children will babble using fingerspelled handshapes similar to ways hearing children babble sounds. As hearing children match sounds to printed letters, Deaf children match fingerspelled handshapes and letters when they learn to spell and write
Fingerspelling can be used for specific words (book titles, names of cities and streets) and abbreviations for names, places, and objects
Fingerspelling has resulted in a form called lexicalized signs and loan signs which provide evidence of the effects ASL has when it meets the English language and new signs evolve
