Ep. 56
Kant
Strange man, but one of the greatest philosophers of all time
What makes someone the greatest of all time?
Great times of struggle
Put into a perfect scenario for his philosophy and it worked out well
Inspired by Copernicus and the Scientific Revolution
Despite Hume, Kant embraces metaphysics and changes philosophy forever.
Kant is initially VERY BORING and hard to understand without copious amounts of research
Author does so and even goes to the lengths to counter his own biases.
A lot of teachers suck at teaching Kant because they don't define Kant's terms- they are very complex.
Wasting people's time and confusing them
Responsibility as an educator to the students- a young mind with a willingness to learn is the most valuable resource on Earth
Philosophy teachers are being very complex as an ego trip and acting like they are better than the student who wants to learn about philosophy
"Worse than Hitler to me"- shows the author wants more bright minds interested in his passion, philosophy and these lazy teachers are wasting it.
Don't let teachers squander this as a student!
What Kant focuses on- what we know and how we think at all
Kant uses a logical argument to prove the existence of the physical world
I think, therefore I am- humans are a thinking thing that exist.
What does it mean to exist at all?
What is time? We measure it, but don't experience it directly
Experienced indirectly through things moving around us, like stuff moving around.
We are at a moment in time in space
Finally proves that we do, at the very least, exist. (Broad explanation)
David Hume rebuilding philosophy
WHY?
He destroyed it
He made it clear that we don't know anything for certain.
Cause/effect imposed by the humans to make sense, but not already out there.
We can't even know if the physical world exists at all
An embarrassing moment for philosophers- pathetic
Metaphysics led us to a wrong conclusion- not scientific. This makes it a bad process.
Revolutionizes the use of metaphysics after Hume
Science in the early days
Very passive, just observation of the outside world
Easy no longer today and recently- more active and humans projecting themselves onto the universe.
Why is any of this important?
