Reformation- the action or process of reforming an institution or practice.
Sonno Jo- the shogun worked to rally the people around this idea. They used the slogan “Sonno Jo” which meant Revere the emperor!
sovereignty- supreme power or authority, the authority of a state to govern itself or another provinces.
Oligarchy- a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution. Meiji oligarchy is called the domain clique
Ainu- a member of an aboriginal people of Japan. they were culturally and physically distinct from their Japanese neighbor's until the second part of the 20th century.
treaties- a formally concluded and ratified agreement between countries.
commodore Perry- naval officer who headed an expedition that forced Japan in 1853–54 to enter into trade and diplomatic relations with the West
Constitution/ Charter- a document defining the formal organization of a corporate body. the constitution is the Charter of the United Nations
iwakura mission- The Iwakura Mission or Iwakura Embassy was a Japanese diplomatic voyage to the United States and Europe
modernization- japan modernized their transportation, buildings, government, video games, and any thing like bridges or underground trains
Imperial Rule- the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies.
