Nationalisation
the government wanted to introduce measures to ensure that British industry would become more efficient and competitive.
Attlee the prime minister thought the only way to do this way nationalising all the key industries in Britain

these industries included coal, gas, electricity, transport, airlines, and iron and steel

he also believed that it was wrong for a few owners and shareholders to profit from these key industries ; they should profit everyone

nationalisation was welcomed by workers in the affected industries and there trade unionists. conditions in many workplaces improved and many were offered sick pays and holiday pay.

Britain has spent a quarter of its national wealth on the war effort. Factories that had once built cars, fridges, cookers and vacuum cleaners had been turned into mass production of tank, guns , bullets and bombs.

much of Europe was damaged and in no state to buy British goods. The traditional overseas markets, had been in decline even before the war , we even more disrupted by the conflict.
a weaker Britain was unable to stop the empire form breaking up. 1947 India , Britain's 'jewel in the crown' was given independence. soon other countries followed suit and the idea of British empire died.

not everyone benefited still people without jobs who struggled to survive. pensioners saw pensions decrease as prices rose with inflation. some people were still payed low wages and discriminated against because of gender or race and not being able to enjoy benefits of affluence

an examination at the age of 11 years old (eleven plus) placed children in different types of schools
if they passed this exam they went to grammar schools- and were expected to carry on education after 15 , possibly go to different to university or get professional jobs

act was a successful because many students gained a basic education and a large number acquired skills necessary to secure employment
