‘When Considering the Long, Long Journey of 28,000 Rubber Ducks’: “refused to join a chorus of rub-a-dub”
“chorus” of a traditional Western nursery rhyme could be representative of the universal language imposed by the colonisers.
...ways of bringing peace, clarity
‘i. in which the cartographer explains himself’: "My job / is to untangle the tangled, / to unworry the concerned.”
Here, the Cartographer wanting to bring clarity to this ‘messy, uncivilised’ island demonstrates the colonial/missionary ideology.
‘xi.’: “he made our roads a little / smoother, a little straighter, as if in drawing / he might erase a small bit of history’s disgrace.” (here, “disgrace” being injustices and discrimination.)
-
‘Roads’: “so many roads we trod upon / and every mile, another song.” + direct speech (“Our people sing:”).
-
'In Praise of Maps': "hymn then a song in praise of maps" + list of maps' benefits with repetition of "without which".
...ways of empowering, breaking free
'xvii.': “Ain’t nutt’n iambic bout dis.” + “DUP-DUP-dudududu- [...] / dis is what was stolen from Quashie”.
Through the use of music and an unknown meter, fighting against the oppression of the colonisers and the universal language and rhythm that they imposed. + . Musically within the poem itself.

...a part of nature
‘Hymn to the Birds’: “as of it were / on the delicacy of / such sweet syllables / that flocks take flight.”
‘vii.’: “what are turtles born with / if not maps that [...] guide them towards ocean instead of land?”
'Unsettled': “this island: unwritten, unsettled, unmapped."
Island presented as untamed, wild, and natural because it has not yet been tarnished by colonisers enforcing their principles on it, notably through mapping. + Insisted upon with the enumeration of words beginning in 'un'.
