These particles become suspended in the air, causing erosion where they initially were. The wind drops these particles in another place where silt is formed. Sandstorms are fairly common in the Sahara Desert, where warm gusts of wind often send large clouds of dust and debris, especially in arid areas of West Africa during the dry season. The phenomenon known as "Harmattan" usually lasts from January to April.
