URI
Pharyngitis
S/SX- fever, sore throat, fatigue
Diagnosed by a physical exam, blood test, or throat culture
inflammation of the larynx
CNA Interventions- force fluids, position comfortably, monitor I&O
Acute Nasopharyngitis
S/SX- sore throat, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, fever, fatigue
common cold
Diagnosed by a physical exam
CNA Interventions- force fluids
Influenza
S/SX- coughing, phlegm, fever, sore throat, chills, fatigue
flu
Diagnosed by a physical exam or a rapid antigen test
CNA Interventions- force fluids, make sure meds are taken, position comfortably
Pneumonia
bacterial or viral aspiration
S/SX- fever, chills, high respiratory and heart rate, pallor, cyanosis
Diagnosed by looking at the symptoms, using labs, and a CXR
CNA Interventions- keep environment cool, encourage resting, force fluids
CA of the larynx
S/SX- difficulty swallowing, labored breathing, coughing up phlegm and blood, voice changing, persistent sore throat
Diagnosed by a biopsy, laryngoscopy, CT scans, and fine needle aspiration
CNA Intervention- show support, force fluids, comfortable positioning, monitor I&O
Tracheostomy
surgically creating a hole in the front of your neck into the trachea
CNA Interventions- help avoid eating and drinking prior to surgery, comfortable positioning, watch incision site
Tonsillectomy
surgical removal of the tonsils
CNA Interventions- position on side, prone, or sitting up, discourage coughing, elevate HOB, ice, cool clear liquids only and no red
02 Therapy
uses oxygen as a medical treatment to restore O2 levels in the blood, contain carbon monoxide toxicity, maintain enough oxygen while anesthetics are given
COPD
Asthma
airways narrow and swell
S//SX- labored breathing, wheezing, low systolic BP, chest tightness, coughing
Diagnosed by multiple blood tests, peak flow rate, spirometry, PE
CNA Interventions- pursed lip breathing, help with positioning, avoid odors, keep warm
Bronchitis
S/SX- excessive mucous secretions, reddened walls, recurrent productive cough
Diagnosed by a physical exam to listen to the lungs and testing
CNA Interventions- elevate HOB, make sure antipyretics are being taken
