Chapter 7
Fascia
Perimysium - surrounds group of cells
Epimysium - surrounds entire muscle belly
Endomysium - surrounds single cell
Fascia profunda - surrounds muscle groups
Periosteum - surrounds bone
Contractile unit
Myofibrils are made up of thread-like myofilaments
Myofibrils are divided into
sarcomeres (segmens)
Fibers are made up of tubular myofibrils
Muscle belly is made up of fasciles
which are made up of fibers (cells)
Sarcomeres are made up
of thick and thin myofilaments
Contraction
Pulls bone A to bone B
Pulls bone B to bone A
Contraction - pulls fascial elements toward center
Pulls both bones together
Functions of
muscle contraction
Assist circulation
Produce movement
Produce body heat
(thermogenesis)
Stabilize posture
Properties
Contractility
Extensibility - stretch without being damaged
Excitability - respond to stimuli
Elasticity - return to original length after a stretch
Types
Smooth - ab organs / involuntary
Skeltal - movement / voluntary
Cardiac - heart / involuntary
Attachment sites
Insertion - moving lever
Origin - non-moving lever
Myofacial unit - Muscle fibers (cells) + connective tissue
