Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are given at the end of a unit and used to evaluate student learning.
District Assessments: Are test given each 9 weeks in each subject to check for student understanding of material covered over the 6 weeks period.
Research Paper: Are given at the end of the unit of study and require the student to show their own understanding of the topic.
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used to gather evidence of student learning, provide, feedback, and help teachers adjust instructional strategies.
Exit Ticket: Students write down what the main idea behind the lesson taught that day was or answer a question about what they learned that day or the previous day.
Think-Pair-Share: Students answer question asked by teacher and then pair up with a partner to discuss their responses.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the students. Usually given as pre-assessments to gather information the teacher can use to plan lessons that meet the needs of the students.
Surveys: Teachers can gather the assumptions and previous knowledge students have about the concepts that will be taught in the unit.
KWL Charts: This lets the teacher know what the student knows, wants to know, and what they have learned before a lesson.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments are formal periodic forms of testing done throughout the school year. There is almost no academic feedback and are used to determine if they are learning the content material for future assessments.
STAAR: Standardized test used to assess students on a yearly basis to see if they know the content material for their grade level.

Performance
Definition: Performance assessments require the students to preform a task rather than selecting an answer from a test.
Persuasive Writing: Students write an essay to convince their peers to view their perspective on a subject they learned and researched.
Map: Students can create a mind map or concept map to organize their information and determine what is important. This will also let students connect their information how they understand it.
