Assessments
Formative
Definition: Process of gathering evidence and monitoring student learning to adjust instruction and improve learning.
Examples: discussion, quizzes, observations, questioning, pre-assessments, homework
Journal Entry: Students record in their journal a small summary of a concept or lesson. Teachers can review this summary.
Kahoot: This is an easy way for teachers to check for understanding, and students don't even know they're being evaluated. Teachers can go back and look at the spreadsheet for results.
Summative
Definition: Evaluate student's learning at the end of a unit or year, by comparing it against a standard. Feedback is not the focus, these assessments are focused towards a grade.
Portfolios: Only can be used as a summative assessment when it's the end result or product of the students learning like a lab report.
Examples: Standardized tests, final exams, research projects

Interim/Benchmarked
Definition: Teachers use these test throughout the school year to evaluate where students are in their learning, and to see if they're on track to perform well in the future. Results of bad grades would warrant intervention.
Examples: 6 weeks tests, MAPS
District Assessments: Assessments given at the end of a 6 or 9 weeks period covering multiple units.
Essays: Essays could be used as interim tests, but only if they're scored towards a rubric.
Diagnostic
Definition: Given at the beginning of a unit or year. This is a pre-test to see where students are BEFORE you teach the unit. Teachers can tailor activities and lessons to the learner's stage of learning.
Running records: Taken at the earlier stages of reading; A way of testing students reading levels through read-aloud and observation.

Performance
Definition: Measures student skills and application of knowledge based on tasks like certain problems or specific course standards. They should be open ended without one single answer to be authentic.
Examples: Journals, portfolios, projects

Science experiments: Help students design and carry out different concepts independently or with a group.
