Formative
Definition: The process of gathering evidence of student learning, providing feedback, and adjusting instruction strategies to enhance achievement (Ex. discussion, quiz, etc.)
Examples:
Three-Way Summaries: Students will each create three summaries of three different lengths (10–15 words, 30–50 words, and 75–100 words) to use different modes of thinking, attention to detail, and communicating messages with minimal wording
Strategic Questioning: Involve asking students higher-order questions to require more in-depth thinking, such as "Why?" and "How?"
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Used to see where students' strengths and weaknesses are within the learning material and determine their success with future assignments and assessments
Examples:
STAAR: Standardized testing gives teachers an unbiased representation of students' understanding of current content material
P-SAT: This assessment provides teachers and students with an unbiased representation of students' understanding of standardized questions and foreshadows their success on the SAT
Performance
Definition: Gives students an opportunity outside of testing to display their knowledge and understanding of the content
Examples:
That's A Rap: Students take a specified portion of text and turn it into a rap, rapping it to the class in groups
iMovie: Students perform a scene of their choosing to act out and create a movie that accurately describes the scene with a modern take
Summative
Definition: At the end of a large chunk of learning to review what you want the students to know. Includes criteria for ensuring high-quality assessment (Ex. standardized testing, final exams, major cumulative projects, research projects, etc.)
Examples:
Literary Analysis Essay: Students write an essay at the end of a literature unit to display understanding of the text, grow contextual knowledge, and develop analytical skills
Mid-Term/Final Exam: Students take an exam in the middle and at the end of the semester to display their knowledge over the units thus far
Diagnostic
Definition: Used as a form of pre-assessment to determine the amount of background knowledge a student may or may not know concerning certain units/topics
Examples:
Initial Writing Prompts: Students write their initial thoughts concerning a writing prompt over a broad, thematic topic that introduces the upcoming text
Surveys: Students check "True" or "False" next to 10 broad statements that will lead into the upcoming text (Ex. Maturity does not depend on age)
