Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are high stakes tests that are given at the end of a unit to gauge student learning. They are compared to a set standard or some sort of benchmark.
SAT: A standardized test, normally used as entrance exams, to gauge the readiness of a student in regards to college.
STAAR: A state standardized test given at the end of a school year to measure what they have learned in that grade level.
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are low stakes tests that are given during a unit or lesson to modify teaching and learning activities. They are used to improve student understanding of the content subject.
Think-Pair-Share: Students are asked a question over the content and write down their answer. They are then paired with a partner that they share their answer with. The teacher is able to walk around and listen to the answers to gauge where they are in the content knowledge.
Exit Ticket: The students are to answer a question or multiple questions over the content before they exit the classroom.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments serve as a pre-assessment to a unit that teachers use to determine students' prior knowledge, their strengths/weaknesses, and skills.
Quick Write: Students are given a prompt or topic to write about, and they have 1 minute to write anything and everything they know about that topic.
3-2-1: The students write about 3 facts they know about a topic, 2 illustrations related to the topic, and 1 question they may have over the topic.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are usually given between summative and formative assessments over grade-level standards and learning goals.
CFA's: Given to the students to determine how well they are retaining the information. Usually given in the middle of units.
Benchmark: Given to the students in the middle of the year to determine how well they know the curriculum. They are often old or already released state standardized exams.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments require the students to create or perform a project or task to showcase their knowledge on the content.
Portfolio: Students compile multiple projects over the content to showcase their knowledge over the content. Usually displayed on a poster, tri-fold board, or in a folder/binder.
Real-life Project: Students are to display or create a real-life scenario regarding the content. For example, biome made of clay, or newton's laws of motion made with objects found within the classroom.
