Assessments
Formative
A formative assessment is the process of gaining student's evidence of learning. After you collect this information you are able to adjust instruction and provide feedback to students.
-
Subject journals such as math, science, and writing are a great way for students to communicate what they know with cut and paste activities.
-
Interim/Benchmark
This is periodic testing throughout the school year and more formal. During these tests there are little to no feedback and they are often taken every 6 weeks or at the end of every module.
At the end of every reading module we take a module assessment to gauge student comprehension and phonics skills. This would be an interim assessment.
We also have map testing in the beginning, middle and end of the year to gauge student growth in subjects such as math and ELAR.
Summative
A summative assessment is at the end of the unit or the year. Before giving a summative assessment students have already had a chance to be retaught through looking at data of other types of assessments, so there is not much room for growth after a summative assessment.

Preformance
In a performance assessment students are asked to preform a task and not just answer questions by choosing an answer choice.
In my first grade math class an example of a performance assessment would be giving the students a number and they have to show the standard form, place value form, picture form, and expanded form.
-
Another example of a performance assessment would be a presentation. The teacher provides students with a task but the students are give creative freedom to find the information and organize it how they choose.
-
Diagnostic
A diagnostic assessment is typically used as a pre assessment to gauge student knowledge on the subject. This assessment will help you target the students who are struggling.
This can easily be shown in a KWL chart before the objective is taught. This will start a conversation with students and help gauge student understanding.
-
Informal reading assessments such as guided reading groups and questions asked during a read aloud, are good ways to check for comprehension of the story as well as get feedback from students.
