Summative
Definition: a high stakes test to evaluate student learning at the end of a unit and comparing it to a standard.
Example: Chapter tests that are given to see if the students understood the material learned in the chapter.
Example: STARR test, a standardized test given once a year to see if students meet the grade level standards.
Formative
Definition: An assessment to gather evidence that will tell the teacher if and how they need to adjust instruction for the students.
Example: A simple class discussion where the teacher and students are talking and answering questions. This can tell the teacher what the students understand.
Example: An exit ticket for students to. The teacher can ask a question and students will answer on the ticket before they leave class.
Interim/ Benchmark
Definition: An assessment given multiple times a year to see where students are at and if they understand the content.

Diagnostic
Definition: A type of pre-assessment that allows the teacher to see the students' strengths, weaknesses, and what they remember about prior instruction.
Example: informal quiz such as, a kahoot game.
Example: A free write journal entry, where students write anything they know about the topic.
Performance
Definition: A form of testing that requires the student to perform a task rather than choosing a multiple choice answer.
Example: Project, where students make something that reflects what they have learned. Students can/ draw a flower and label the parts of it.
