Identify struggling students:
-not meeting set grade-level standards and/or benchmarks
-lack of motivation
-misbehavior
Interventions:
-using differentiated instruction and tailoring lessons to their needs
-small group work
-one-on-one time with teacher
-tutoring services (if available)
-communication with parents
Is the student still struggling?

Call a meeting with parent(s) or guardian
-Discuss the issue and if it's recurring, isolated, and/or appropriate for that student's age.
-Create an action plan and update parents on student progress.
Has any progress been made?

Pre-referral
-teacher works with an intervention team usually consisting of parents, administrators, counselor, and others
-Team creates a plan with interventions to help the student succeed without being referred for SPED
