Plots against Elizabeth
Babington Plot
Duke of Guise, Philip Ii, the Pope, Anthony Babington, Mary Queen of Scots.
The Duke of Guise was to invade England, murder Elizabeth and place Mary on the throne.
Anthony Babington wrote a letter in July 1586 about the conspiracy, which was intercepted by Francis Walsingham. The letter showed Babington's involvement, and caused him to be hung, drawn & quartered.
In October 1586 Mary Queen of Scots was sentenced to death. Elizabeth delayed the warrant but eventually signed it in February 1587.
By this time England and Spain were basically at war. The plot led to Mary's execution and the further prosecution of Catholics.

Ridolfi Plot
Robert Ridolfi, Duke of Norfolk, Mary Queen of Scots, Philip II, the Pope, Duke of Alba
Philip II told the Duke of Alba to send 10,000 troops across the English Channel to support the plot.
William Cecil discovered the plot and by 1571 was able to arrest the Duke of Norfolk for high treason.
This plot showed that Spain was willing to attack Britain to remove Elizabeth. It also showed Mary was still untrustworthy and that English Catholics needed to be watched.
Throckmorton Plot
Duke of Guise, Mary Queen of Scots cousin, Philip II, Francis Throckmorton, Mary Queen of Scots.
Francis Walsingham discovered the plot in 1583, and used spies to reveal papers containing Throckmorton's role. Throckmorton was then captured and tortured till he confessed and then was executed in 1584.
This further showed the threats from foreign Catholic countries, and also showed a list of Catholic sympathizers in England. Helping a Catholic Priest was now punishable by death.
