Suffering
physical and mental. Physical because of the gunshots and hunger. Mental because they have lost best friends and family. Also because they have to kill people and that plays in their head all the time.
Good and Evil
There are good people: The Army, where Ishmael was in. UNICEF is also good.
There are evil people: The Rebels.
Peace and War
First there was Peace in Sierra Leone, but then the rebels came and started a war. When Ishmael moved to his uncle's house, there was peace for a moment but later, there was war again. Then he went to The United States and there was luckily peace.

methaphors
'My squad was my family, my gun was my provider and protector' (page 126)
simile
'The river below was flowing quietly, as if asleep' (page 81).
'It was difficult to hear what they were saying because their voices sounded like bees, as if something was obstructing their noses' (page 81-82).
connotations
A crow suddenly fell on the ground. He wasn't dead but was unable to fly. Ishmael and his friends were very hungry, so they ate the bird. When it got dark, they were scared. It felt like the night was darker and quieter than the previous nights. Ishmael and his friends thought that the bird had caused this.
(page 81)
Point of view
This story is written in the First person, because Ishmael tells what he had experienced. For example, if it was written in the third person, it may seem unclear and you will understand less about it.

Tense
The story takes place in West-Africa (Sierra Leone). In the book are a few words in italic. I think that that are words in their language. For example: Crapes = Sneakers (page 7) and Palampo = Single (page 23).

Main characters
protagonist = Ishmael Beah. I think he is the protagonist because he tells the story in his perspective. He is a round character because he changed in the end of the story. He was a soldier but in the end he is not anymore.
Antagonist = The rebels because they destroy all the villages and murder all civilians in Sierra Leone. The rebels are a flat character because they continue to ruin villages.
Author
The author is Ishmael Beah. He wrote this book because he experienced this in real life. I think he wrote this book because he wanted to share his story with the world.
