Caudillo-sosaGabriellaintegumentarysystem
Layer of the skin
Epidermis
Avasular because it doesn't have any blood vessels.
Composed of multiple layers of flattened cells.
Outer most layer of everyone's skin.
Cells of epidermis
Melanocytes produce melanin located at the bottom of skin's epidermis.
Keratinocytes produces keratin where millions of cells must rub off each day.
The tactile cells are rarely found and they are associated with sensory nerves.
Langerhans has a primary role on the onset and regulation of the immune.
dermis
Found in the inner layer of the skin.
Main function is defensive, offspring protection against any trauma and injury.
Has connective tissues, blood vessels, sebaceous, and sweat glands.
Stratum
lucidum
Only visible in the thick skin.
spinosum
The cells in the layers form desmosomes fusing the cells together.
basale
The stratum germanlum where cells constantly divide.
granulosum
The only visible in the thick skin.
corneum
Outer most layer where there is dead cells and there are high levels of keratin.
Hypodermis
Consists well-vascularized, areolar connective tissue, loose, and adipose tissue.
layer directly below the dermis and serves to connect the skin to the underlying fascia of the bones and muscles.
Not strictly a part of the skin.
Body membranes
Mucous
Glands in the mucous membrane make mucous
Mucous= mucosa
Mucous membrane/mucosa is a membrane that lines various types of cavities in the body and covers the surface of the internal organs.
Mucous membrane is a composite of the connective tissue and epithelial tissue.
.cutaneous
The lower layer of the integumentary system in vertebrates.
cutaneou is made from epithelial.
cutaneous=skin
Located mostly everywhere around the body cover.
Synovial
The synovial membrane surrounds the joints of the shoulder, knee, and elbow.
The synovial membrane has fluid readily exchanges water and nutrients with blood as along with the rest of the body fluids.
The synovial membrane is a type of connective tissue that lines up the cavity of a freely movable joint.
Serous
The parietal membrane lines up the body cavity.
The thin membrane is made up of the mesothelium tissue which originates from the mesoderm.
Function is to lubricate and protect the organs.
the serous membrane lines and encloses several body cavities.
serous=serous
Nails
The nail body is the clear part of the nail.
the free edge is the overhang of the tip of the nail.
The nail plate is the hard part of the nail
The nails matrix is the zone where the nail grows.
The lunule is the white crescent at proximal end of the nail.
Burns
2nd degree- Skin is red and blistered
3rd degree- High risk for fluid loss
1st degree- Skin is red and swollen
Accessory organ
Sudoriferous (sweat gland)
Small tubular structures situated within and under the skin.
Eccrine
The eccine glands secrete water to the skin and pores are formed.
sebaclous gland
Microscopic exocrine glands in the skin that secrete an oily or waxy matte.
Blackheads
Appears on surface of skin when a sebaceous gland duct is blocked
Acne
An active inflammation of the sebaceous glands accompanied by "pimples" caused by irritations.
Skin
Rule of nines
Head 4 1/2
Chest 18
Arm 4 1/2
Leg 9
Skin conditions
Vitiligo
melanocytes dies
genetically
White spots all over body
Jaundice
Yellow skin or yellow eyes
Signs of liver disorders
Albinism
Does not have Melanin
Pale
White hairs, skin, and lashes
Functions of integumentary system
One of the largest organs of the body(About 2 square meters; ~10 lbs)
Organs including skin and accessory organs (hair, glands, nails)
Functions
Excreation: waste in form of urea (sweat)
Synthesis of Vitamin D
Sensation: touch, vibration, pain, temperature
Regulation of body temperature
Hemoglobin
dark red
Might be pink
Moles
Cancer
Malignant
grow relentlessly and may become killers
Benign
Does not spread and grows slowly
Carotene
Orange or Yellow
Make cell parts and converts vitamin A
Metanin
Caused by exposure of the sun
Ranges from brown to yellow
