Deaf Individual World and the Hearing World
Work
In a research, it showed that Deaf people with less education experience low income and people usually do not see their potential.
Attitudinal barriers are created by authority figures and tend to doubt their abilities as a person because they feel superior as a person because they are hearing.
Deaf people who choose not to get a higher education or even vocational training programs, struggle more than the hearing people with equal qualifications.
Hearing people tend to be ignorant and not hire Deaf people because they don't think they can work as well as hearing people.
Deaf individuals in minority groups struggle more in getting jobs.
Mental Health
Some deaf individuals struggle with communication at home and blame that as the cause for their addictions and psychological problems.
Deaf people are also afraid of getting help because they are scared that their problems can be exposed to all the Deaf community
The National Association of the Deaf has papers on how deaf people can approach mental health services.
ASL interpreters may not be as experienced in the mental health language, meaning that they can prevent the Deaf individual from successfully getting help from the doctor.
Even if they do not consider it a priority, they need more mental health services than the general population.
Plus, the doctors may not know how to use the interpreter, which means they may talk too fast, use words that are hard to translate, and they may end up talking to the interpreter instead of the client.
Deaf people do not find mental services as a priority to them, because it is hard to find doctors that can actually help them.
Violence
91% of the Deaf female undergrads reported to have experienced aggression by their partners, and hearing females at 34.4%
If the police were involved in a domestic violence case and there was a hearing and a deaf person involved =,it is more likely for the police to listen to the hearing person's story more.
Evidence showed that college students were 1.5 times more likely to be victims of sexual harassment/abuse than hearing students.
The study of Barnett and other researchers found that the domestic violence in relationships is bigger in the Deaf population than the hearing one.
Deaf people tend to not report abuse because they don’t think the police will provide the resources they need.
Health
The found that deaf individuals to have higher risk in cholesterol and heart disease.
It is harder to get help because not many doctors know ASL or provide an interpreter, making it easier to misunderstand medication instructions.
A positive finding on their study was that there wasn’t as many deaf smokers like there is hearing smokers.
If they were to get an interpreter, there would be a higher chance in helping the deaf community have better health literacy.
In study by Barnett and Franks, it was found that deaf adults have poor health and don’t really get help.
