The Not Self
-
A person can be described using 5 aggregates:
- form (body)
- feelings
- perception
- mental formations
- consciousnes
Self doesn't fit into any of these. Self also implies some sort of control; however, you cannot control any of the 5 aggregates
Thus self does not exist
This concept was the hardest for me to grasp because of how ingrained the concept of self is into western culture
Taoism
In the western world, we tend to look at the earth and whats around that and try to explain it more than learn from it. Taoist on the other hand, look at the work and appreciate it for what it is and the beauty and knowledge that it holds.
Looks at the flow of the universe (the Tao or the way) and attempts to mimic it, using non-resistance tactics
Large focus on opposites. There can't be good without the concept of evil. There can't be something without the concept of nothing.
This concept was the most interesting to me. It really fits well with my religious beliefs and love of nature. I plan on looking into more in the future
Vedanta
-
Gangaji was a modern day teacher of this and she stressed discovering silent awareness in all things as crucial to living a life of happiness
Through mindfulness you can being to discover your silent awareness to find your "self", and once you do that, "only good news awaits you"

Choice
Bandersnatch brought up the idea of freedom and how much freedom do we actually have in terms of the choices we make
Our subconsciousness seemingly makes choices for use before we are even fully aware of the choice we want to make

Art

Written
Narrative
We use our experiences (narratives) to define our self identity and, in turn, our self identity influences are future experiences
Rhetorical
Rhetorical self consists of the two words, 'I say'

Quantum
Our view is entirely naturalistic: the mind that underlies the world is a transpersonal mind behaving according to natural laws. It comprises but far transcends any individual psyche
One of the keys to our argument for a mental world is the contention that only conscious observers can perform measurements
-
That a superposition does not survive exposure to this world suggests, if anything, a role for consciousness in the emergence of a definite physical reality

Alone Together
-
Because we can curate our social media feed, we can create a completely different vision of self online
Many of my friends have "finstas" or instagram account that they post on without filtering the shitty parts of their life. On their actual accounts, it looks like their lives are perfect
-
Phones
iGen
The smartphone and social media has caused members of iGen to be more safe than every before, but that is because they hardly leave their houses any more
-
Members of iGen don't see each other as much. This is in big part because "their social life is lived on their phone.
-
Photography
Photographs can assist the photographer’s memory of the event but also shape the way someone else recalls it
Memory is selective, and the memories that persist with us often persist because of aspects of our identity, reinforcing or causing change to the self
