Transportation in Plants
Xylem
Structure:
-
- Xylem stretches from roots to leaves
- consists of vessels which contains pits
Function:
- mechanical support to the plant
- transportation of water and minerals from roots to other parts
Adaptations:
- has hollow lumen walls for easy flow of water
-
- dead structure with no protoplasm
-
-
Phloem
-
Functions:
- transports food from leaves to rest parts of the plants
-
-
-

Transpiration Terms:
Transpiration Pull: a process which enables transpiration in plants by water loss from the leaves and creating a suction creating a pull and enabling water to move from roots to the leaves
-
-
-
Wilting:
Advantages:
- Reduction of transpiration rate
-
Disadvantages:
- photosynthesis rate reduction
water starts acting as a limiting factor - closed stomata reducing the level of CO2 to enter the leaf
