Intrim/Benchmark
Definition: Intrim/benchmark assessments are used to determine where a student is in their learning and if they are on track in that learning. They can be a good measure of how students will do on future assessments.
STARR: STARR is a series of standardized tests used in Texas public schools to assess a student's achievements and knowledge learned in the grade level. They are given at the end of the year.
IStation: Istation Reading provides computer-based assessment and instruction in reading and writing for PreK-12 students. Students complete game-based lessons and activities led by animated characters while the program generates reports on their progress for teachers, parents and administrators.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are designed to assess a students ability to perform a certain task rather than answer multiple choice or short response questions.
Debates: Debates teach students about varied viewpoints and opinions. Skills associated with debate include research, argumentation, reading comprehension, evidence evaluation, and public speaking
Projects: Projects are commonly used by teachers as performance-based activities. They can include everything from research papers to artistic representations of information learned. Projects may require students to apply their knowledge and skills while completing the assigned task and can be aligned with the higher levels of thinking.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic Assessments are used as pre-assessments to discover where a student may be excelling or have misconceptions based on prior knowledge. The results of this style of assessment help teachers plan and cater instruction to specific strengths and weaknesses observed in students.
Running Records: A running record is a way to assess a student's reading progress by systematically evaluating a student's oral reading and identifying error patterns.
Quizizz!: Quizizz allows you to conduct student-paced assessments in a fun and engaging way. After administering the quiz, you receive reports that give you detailed class-level and student-level insights for each student and class. This allows you to group students and adjust lessons accordingly.
Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is the process of gathering evidence of student learning. It is effective for providing feedback, adjusting instruction for reteach, and to gauge student progress and understanding. Formative assessments are more informal, low stakes assignments or activities.
Exit Tickets: These require the students to do some synthesis of the day's content or challenge the students with a question requiring some application of what was learned in the lesson.
One-Pagers: A one-pager is a single-page response to a specific topic or reading. The purpose of a one-pager is to allow the students to learn by allowing the students to create their own images, patterns, and questions relating to the topic or reading.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used to evaluate student understanding at the end of a unit and cover a larger chunk of material. These assessment are higher stakes, carrying a higher grade weight.
District Assessments: District assessments are given once every 9 weeks to help teachers understand how to better instruct their students so they might understand their learning in the future. These assessments are given to every class across the district according to grade level.
Research Project: Research projects happen after a unit has been fully taught. They give the students an opportunity to summarize and synthesize the content that was taught throughout the unit.
