Setting
The story takes place in several places: the house Robert West, Colby, Clementine’s and The bike shop. It has a fictitious setting.
It takes place during the summer vacation .
Connotation
Connotations in the book are for example: the restaurants Auden (and later Eli) visit when it’s nighttime. She can’t sleep because of her insomnia. The 24/7 open restaurants stand for a safe haven for Auden and Eli.

Types
Eli Joseph Stock is also a round character. Eli's best friend Abe, died in an accident. Since the accident, Eli has kept to himself and seemingly stopped riding his bike. After he meets Auden, he slowly becomes his old self again and continued riding his bike.

Auden Penelope West, is a round character. In the beginning of the book when her parents got divorced Auden became very shy and lonely. She studied a lot, stayed out of parties and didn't have many friends. When she visits her dad in beach town Colby, she changes as a person. A whole new world opens for her, she experiences things such as food fights, beach parties and other things you do as a child.
Protagonist
Eli Joseph Stock: Insomniac, teenage boy, used to be a biker until his biker friend dies in a car accident, Auden and him spend all their nights together reliving their childhoods.
Auden Penelope West: insomniac, she has divorced parents and is mature for her age.
Antagonist
Dr. Victoria West: Auden's mother, college teacher, doesn't like Robert because he never helped her raising Auden.

Tense
The tense in this story is the past tense. They talk like the events already happened, for example: "I glanced over, but because of the rack of suits, my view was blocked: she was all I could see now, as Ramon had clearly left the building, lucky guy."

Sarah Dessen wrote the book when she was 26 years old, and had just given birth to her 3 month old baby. While feeding the baby, trying to sleep or trying to stay awake she got inspired to write the book. Writing the book in her newborn’s room was almost like an escape for Dessen.

Love: When we talk about love, we talk about Auden and Eli. "Then he leaned down, kissing me, and I slid my arms around his neck, pulling him a little closer."
Friendship: Auden had almost no friends before she went to Beachtown Colby. In Colby, she met Maggy, Leah, and Esther. she learned what true friendship means and what you do for each other.
Family: Auden had never really a good relationship with her parents and never dared to stand up for herself. Through the book, she learns to stand up for herself and gets a better bond with her parents." I bit my lip. 'I haven't changed,' I told her. This is just me." ( page 279)
