Behavioural approaches
Focuses on observable behaviours which are influenced by environment Nobile, Lyons & Arthur-Kelly, 2017, p.148
Positive reinforcement: teacher rewards students for good behaviour, which then encourages continuous good behaviour.

Antecedent control: teacher reduces chance of distraction by removing students from distraction. Teacher manipulates environment to encourage appropriate behaviour
Applied behaviour analysis: children learn how to behave by being punished by bad behaviour and rewarded for good behaviour.
Function behaviour assessment: teachers observe why behaviours occur through collecting data and then designing intervention methods
Assertive disciple: Assertive teachers clearly communicate expectations, follow up on threats, give explicit directions and are perceived by students to be persistent and consistent. (p169). However - don't take into account wider context of students ecosystems
Behavioural approaches as prevention and intervention:
- Positive level systems: where students can trade coins, vouchers, points etc for other tokens
- Shaping: where students behaviour is shaped through gradual reinforcement
- Differential reinforcement: differentiating reinforcements for select behaviours
- Tactical ignoring: works well on low level inappropriate behaviours. Best used with reinforcement program for good behaviour
- Overcorrection: when student misbehaves, required to restore the situation better than before.
- Response cost: removal of positive reinforcer
