Appendicitis
Definition
Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small fingerlike projection at the tip of the caecum below the ileocaecal valve in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen

Pathophysiology
Obstruction of the appendix results in an inflammatory reaction which leads to oedema and distension. Pressure is applied on the intramural blood vessels, which leads to vascular engorgement, resulting in gangrene of the appendix.
Clinical manifestations
• Persistent, continuous, periumbilical pain.
