Connotations
A connotation in this book is the 24/7 open restaurant, Ray's. The restaurant is like a safe haven for Auden. She can come there when she's unable to sleep because of her insomnia. She feels at ease when she's there.
Themes in the book
Love. In the book Auden learns to love and accept others. Especially Eli, her parents and herself. She's taught that it's okay to be the person you truly are, and to stand up for yourself.
Friendship. Auden's entire life has been full of loneliness and growing up too fast. In beach town Colby, she makes new friends, and experiences the life of a normal teenager. And relives the childhood she missed with Eli.
Family. Auden was never able to stand up to her mother and father, and tell them how she really felt. Auden never had a good relationship with her parents. Throughout the book she learns to stand up to her parents and learns to love them the way they are too.
