Issues in the Development of Autonomous Vehicles
Lack of Transparency
When there is retaliation as we have seen regarding these self-driving cars it is clear that some people have a problem, but why is this? The reason is that they don’t have an understanding because the manufactures aren’t communicating effectively.
It is a scary concept for some to think about a computer driving a car. I would like to do my best to reassure that this technology could be useful, but only if action is taken right now.
It is important that everyone has the same understanding of the technology because it has the power to affect everyone.
I hope that my project will inspire people to want to break down this wall that is built between big companies and the public. By doing so the door for conversation is opened and actual changes can be made.
If all this is happening behind closed doors you alienate the public and it is hard to get approval. This is a problem that extended to different topics other than mine so I would hope to see a larger push for change amongst everyone.
The only way to do this is to allow open conversation. People want to have their voice heard and rightfully so.
When it is not clear what kind of testing these products went through it becomes scary.
Simply saying this technology is safe is not enough for everyone anymore. This technology is new and will still have to develop further to gain back support.
My hope is to call attention to and question the process in which these vehicles are developed in hopes to give a larger voice to the public.
This causes issues as people are expected to have trust in the manufacturing process, but it hasn’t been perfect so far.
I believe that educating the masses about this issue would ultimately build more support while bringing in different viewpoints.
The manufactures of these vehicles are not transparent with the public, and this is a problem. Without gathering the understanding of the masses the implementation of this technology is sure to face a lot of backlash, which it has.
I think that my project will teach people to understand when big corporations are not being transparent and make a change. First by recognizing that there is still work to be done and trying to find a solution.
I want to mainly address the fact that the general public doesn’t fully understand what all is involved with autonomous vehicles.
Some Aspects are Transitioning too quickly
More cars with the same regulations could lead to more accidents with autonomous vehicles which would only slow the whole process.
This technology is still new, but if nothing is said now then chances are that nothing will ever change. This could cause many issues if these cars start rolling out with bugs that could put multiple lives in danger.
I hope to insure that regulations are kept up to date as more advances are made.
I think that experts in collaboration with the general public should work together to insure that the decisions made by manufactures are regulated.
Allowing the public to have a voice is curtail for implementing this technology correctly. This perspective is important because once everyone is on the same page we can begin to roll out and further the development of this technology in a safe and ethical way. In not doing so, safety is jeopardized and support for autonomous vehicles will start to dwindle.
By implementing regulations first we have the power to prevent extremely fatal accidents that may throw a wrench in the idea of self-driving cars permanently.
I believe that it is necessary for more helpful conversations to be had, first between experts and trickling down to the public. With this we can ensure that everything is worked through and conclusions for safety can be drawn.
Big Corporations have too much Optimism
Optimism in itself is okay, but I think it’s dangerous as it has the potential to set issues aside and forget them.
Brushing off these concerns in the manner that we have seen will do nothing but slow acceptance and slow the whole transition.
Many of the people that have a role in the development are overly optimistic and too quick to shoot down any concerns voiced from the public.
I believe that this is an important aspect as these are the things that are holding back acceptance and therefore implementation of these cars.
While some of the goals seem a little lofty and unattainable I do think that there are many benefits to be had from these vehicles. It is important to not get stuck on “how great the future will be” as I have seen a lot throughout my research.
While I was reading I couldn’t help feeling like the big people were saying something along the lines of “we got this, don’t you worry.” By doing this they are not benefiting anyone.
It is okay if they don’t have all the answers because we can find them together.
Miscellany
I think my topic should matter because nearly everyone uses a car for transportation.
What I would like to do is bring attention and ultimately change that will better this process for the millions of people that this effects. I think that a lot of people will be able to benefit from my work to give them more understanding and push for change.
I hope to use the knowledge that I gain by learning how to effectively challenge someone’s position. By this I mean that I would like to develop skills to contribute to bringing about real world change.
