Formative Assessments
Formative assessments are more informal in their nature. Formative assessments guide future instruction and help a teacher understand where students are at in regards to learning the content.
Examples of formative assessments:
Performance Assessment
A performance assessment is project based learning where students must perform a task rather than selecting answers on a test form.
Examples of performance assessments:
- Group projects
- Portfolios
Diagnostic Assessments
A diagnostic assessment looks at a students current strengths before the lesson is taught. This is way of assessing students prior to their learning.
Examples of diagnostic exams:
- Pre-assessment before unit
- Where to start word test

Summative Assessments
Summative assessments are at the end of a unit or a large chunk of material that is being learned.
Summative assessments may be used to help guide following year instruction, but the material should be fully taught when summative assessments take place.
