The Blood and its components
Cardiovascular System
Relates to the blood, circulatory vessels and its transport.
This system circulates nutrients + removes waste material from the cells of the body.
Blood vessels
Acting as a transport network for the blood are blood vessels.
Depending on their function they vary in thickness + structural composition.
Plasma
Transports formed elements. Straw coloured fluid.
Erythrocytes - Red blood cellss
Platelets - thrombocytes
Leucocytes - white blood cells
Monocytes - type of WBC. Responsible for bacteria, virus and fungi.
Neutrophils - type of WBC. Lead the immune systems response to threats in the body.
lymphocytes - Type of WBC. Produce b and t cells.
Haemoglobin - Protein within RBC cells. Binds to oxygen.
Functions of the blood
Supply of oxygen tissues.
Supply of nutrients : glucose, amino acids and fatty acids.
Removal of waste : co2, urea and lactic acid.
Immunological functions : circulation of WBC + antibodies detecting foreign material.
Coagulation - Response to a broken blood vessel. Converts blood from a liquid to a semi solid gel to stop bleeding.
Messenger functions : transport of hormones + signalling of tissue damage.
Regulation of body PH.
Regulation of core body temperature.
Hydraulic functions
Thermoregulation and Blood flow
Vasoconstriction - narrowing of blood vessels. Smooth muscle contracts.
Vasodilation - Widening of blood vessels. Smooth muscle relaxes.
