Abstract
Blood behaves in a predicatable manner
The area of origin and point of origin can be determined with the use of mathmatical equations
Chapter 1 - Introduction
Bloodstain analysis has been under scrutiny due to improper analyses
Purpose of the study is to analyze the methods used for bloodstain anaysis and to determine which of those methods are the most and least accurate
Limitations of the Study: This study only covers the basics or bloodstain analysis
Research Hypothesis: Calculating the angle of impact will provide information regarding where it had originated from, gunshot injuries result in blood mists, bloodstain analysis reveals causations of bloodstains
Chapter 2 - Literature Review
Characteristics of Blood
The most common physical evidence found at crime scenes is blood
Chemical proterties of blood
Blood reacts differently with different surfaces
Blood behaves differently depending on the forces applied to it
Chapter 3 - Methodologies
Blood behanves according to Newtons laws of gravity
Bloodstain patterns are dependant upon surface tension and terminal velocity
A specific equation is used to calculate the angle of impact, point of origin and point of convergence
To determine angle of impact, measure the length and width of the bloodstain
To determine the direction of travel, look at the pointy end of the stain
Chapter 4 - Results
Experiments were done to analyze the behavior of blood spatters given forces of low, medium and high velocity impacts
Low velocity impacts result in circular drops
Splashed bloodstain patterns are typically oval in shape in addition to a large central area of periheral spattering
Medium velocity stains are typically the result of a struggle. In some cases, weapons are the producers of such stains
High impact velocity stains are the result of gunshot injuries
Chapter 5 - Discussion & Conclusion
Investigators need to follow strict procedures which include documentation and preserving evidence
Evidence must also be photographed
Understanding biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics to accurately analyze bloodstain patterns
