Layers of the epidermis; Stratum Basale ( stratum germanium) -deepest layer, cells constantly dividing (mitosis) Stratum spinosum (prickly cell layer)- cells in this layer from desmosomes fusing the cells together in a tight mass, give the layer it's "spikey" appearance Stratum Granulosum- process of keratinization begins here and cells die Stratum Lucidum ( clear layer)- viable only in thick skin, palms, and soles Stratum Corneum- outermost layer, 20-30 cells thick of dead cells, high levels of keratin- prevents water loss.
