Summative
Definition: A graded, high-stakes test that is given to a student typically at the end of a unit.
Example 1: 6-week district assessments: district assessments given at the end of long periods of time (every 6 weeks).
Example 2: Mid-term/End-term exams: these exams test the knowledge the students have learned, or obtained.
Diagnostic
Definition:In order to help a teacher plan his/her lesson a teacher must know his/her student's needs. To do so diagnostics test is usually run. The point of a diagnostics test is to find a student's strengths and weaknesses.

Example 2: KWL Chart: A test given to students in order to see what students know before instruction is given. In this test students state what they know first, what they want to second, and what they learn last.
Performance
Definition: In a performance assessment a student must complete or attempt a given task rather than take an actual paper or online assessment.
Example 1: Human number line: a task where each students are given a number and must order themselves in order from either greatest to least or least to greatest.
Example 2: Hearing test: Students are given headphones that give out random "beeps" so that they may raise their hands based on which ear they hear a beep in.
Formative
Definition: A non-graded, low-stakes way of assessing students to get feedback in order to modify and deliver future, effective lessons.
Example 2: 3-2-1: An opportunity, at the end of a lesson, for a student to write 3 things they learned, 2 things they found interesting, and 1 thing they still wonder about.
Example 1: Quickwrite: A period of time, usually at the end of a lesson, that students write what they have just learned about for a few minutes.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An interim, or benchmark, is a test given to a student to track the student's progress.

Example 2: STAAR: a test given towards the end of the year that score a student's progress. If a student is not on track it is possible this student may be held back.
