Epithelial tissue
-
Function: protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, sensory perception
Location: Air sacs of lungs, walls of capillaries
Form: Flat and thin, single layer
Location: throughout the body, covers all body surfaces both inside and out
-
-
-
Location: lining of kidney tubules, ducts of glands, covering surface of ovaries
-
Form: single layer, cube-shaped cells
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Form: multi-layered, squamous cell
-
-
Location: lining air passages like the trachea, tubes of the reproductive system
-
-
-
Function: stretchable tissue, also forms barrier to block diffusion
Form: thick, layered cuboidal cell
-
-
-
-
-
Connective Tissue
-
Location: in between other tissues everywhere in the body, including the nervous system.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Function: protective cushion, insulation to preserve body heat, stores energy
-
-
Location: dermis, tendons, and ligaments
-
-
-
Location: many areas of the body including: Joints between bones e.g. the elbows, knees and ankles. Ends of the ribs. Between the vertebrae in the spine.
-
-
-
-
Function: in the body, such as locomotion, support and protection of soft tissues, calcium and phosphate storage, and harboring of bone marrow
-
Form: of connective tissue, given its origin in the bones and the presence of potential molecular fibers in the form of fibrinogen.
-
-
-
Muscle Tissue
-
Form: is a soft tissue that composes muscles in animal bodies, and gives rise to muscles' ability to contract
Skeletal
Form: Long cylindrical fiber, striated, many peripherally located nuclei
Function: Voluntary movement, produces heat, protects organs
Location: Attached to bones and around entrance points to body (e.g., mouth, anus)
Smooth
Form: Short, spindle-shaped, no evident striation, single nucleus in each fiber
Function: Involuntary movement, moves food, involuntary control of respiration, moves secretions, regulates flow of blood in arteries by contraction
-
-
Nerve Tissue
Location: in peripheral nerves throughout the body and in the organs of the central nervous system, the brain and spinal cord.
