Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used to provide feedback and gather evidence of student learning. These assessments allow teachers to see what they are teaching well versus what they may need to try a different approach with.
Examples:
- Exit tickets - Students must complete a slip covering what they learned that class and turn it in before leaving
- Think-pair-share - Students think about a question they are given then pair up and share their thoughts with each other
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Periodic testing throughout the school year. These allow for little to no student feedback. Typically given as multiple choice tests. Teachers can see the concepts their students are struggling with.
Examples:
- STAAR Tests - Standardized tests given in the state of Texas to students in specific grade levels every year to show competency of those subjects
- Project scored with a rubric - This can be any sort of project, but must reflect a students understanding of the content and must be graded with a standardized rubric
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used to formally sum up what students have learned in a unit or chapter. To prepare for these students need to review what they have learned up to that point. Typically these weigh heavily in the grade book.
Examples:
- Final exams - These sum up everything students have learned in a course or semester
- Final Research Project - These allow students to gather knowledge and then sum all of that knowledge up into a project
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments require students to perform a task rather than answering question or circling answer choices.
Examples:
- Creating Youtube video - This can be used in math classes. Students create their own video representation of a song with lyrics that correlate with the content they are learning
- Writing poetry - Students show their understanding of certain themes by writing poetry that correlates
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments allow teachers to gauge students' previous or current knowledge going into the lesson. Teachers can determine students' weaknesses, strengths, and skills from these assessments.
Examples:
- KWL chart - This asks students to fill out a chart with what they think they know, what they want to know, and what they learned
- Math pre-assessment - teachers can see what their students know already, so they can decide what background information needs to be re-taught
