Formative
Definition: This is the process of gathering evidence to assess student learning, while finding ways to adjust instruction.
One Minute Papers- This is when a teacher poses a question, then students get one minute to write an answer. The teacher can collect and read the papers to assess students' thinking
Think-Pair-Share- This gives students to think about a question or topic, then pair up with a partner and share what they are thinking. This allows teachers to circulate and assess students' learning

Summative
Definition-Summative assessments are given at the end of big chunks of learning to assess student progress and what they retained from a larger portion of content.
STAAR- STAAR is a state regulated exam that is given throughout a student's education from elementary through high school. This is to assess if a student has retained the required content to move on to the next grade.

Final Exams- By assessing through a final exam, teachers can assess what was learned throughout an entire semester, or even an entire year
Diagnostic
Definition- This is a form of a pre-assessment to allow teachers to assess where students are at with their prior knowledge of content and where the instruction needs to begin.
KWL Chart- With this chart, a teacher can see what each student already knows and what they want to learn. This can allow the teacher to adjust lessons to keep the content engaging for the class. The students also get to fill in what they learned to solidify what they took from the lesson.
Unit Pre-Test- A unit pretest allows teachers to assess a student's prior knowledge before beginning a unit. This can eliminate going over information that students already understand completely
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: This consists of testing throughout the school year. This is a more formal style of testing, such as 6 weeks tests.
Chapter Tests- Teachers can use chapter tests to assess a students understanding of a piece/chapter of text ass they work through reading a book, this allows teachers to confront any confusion before moving on.
6 Weeks Tests- By giving these assessments every 6 weeks, students can assess how students are retaining content from an entire unit and long period of time.
Performance
Definition-Students perform a task to showcase their learning or understanding of an area of content
Reader's Theater- This is a fantastic way to assess students' fluency and comprehension of a piece of text or a play in ELAR.

Science Project- A science project is a great way for students to show a teacher how they understand science content. They explain and do an activity to showcase their understanding.
