Barbary pirates:american ships on north african coast being seized, so Jefferson agreed to pay tribute to Barbary govts. When they demanded more, Jefferson sent ships to fight. Sporadic attacks for 4 years-resulted in american victory (although not decisive)
Chesapeake-Leopard Affair:Brittish ship Leopard fired on american ship chesapeake off the coast of virginia, americans taken and impressed, many wanted war but Jefferson was diplomatic
Embargo Act of 1807: prohibited american ships from sailing in foreign ports, backfired and brought economic hardships, brought upon economic depression bc the us needed britain for trade. Repealed in 1809
