who of her parents were really telling the truth
why was Nana rewarding hateful/spiteful behaviour
why was Jalil so submissive to his wives instead of taking up for his own blood
At the end of Ch1-10, Nana was right all along. I regret judging her so harshly but she was negative and unhappy and toxic to her own daughter.
They deserved it now that I read through it all
Cause he is cowardice.
Ch 3 Pg 11
Ch8 Pg 37
Ch 5 Pg 19
A man's heart is a wretched, wretched thing, Mariam. It isn't like a mother's
womb. It won't bleed, it won't stretch to make room for you. I'm the only one who loves
you. I'm all you have in this world, Mariam, and when I'm gone you'll have nothing. You'll
have nothing. You are nothing!"
Once, to please Nana,
Mariam even yelled at Muhsin, told him he had a mouth shaped like a lizard's ass and was
consumed later with guilt, shame, and fear that they would tell Jalil. Nana, though, laughed
so hard, her rotting front tooth in full display, that Mariam thought she would lapse into one
of her fits. She looked at Mariam when she was done and said, "You're a good daughter."
Jalil stopped in midsentence. He crossed and uncrossed his arms. A young Hindi couple,
the wife cradling a boy, the husband dragging a suitcase, passed between them. Jalil
seemed grateful for the interruption. They excused themselves, and he smiled back politely.
Chapter 5 quote had been quoting Nana's words. And sadly I can relate to this with my own father. Sometimes my own mother..
Chapter 3 quote was sad. It showed she was only wanting to make her mother proud. I completely understand that. The sad part is, you'll go to worst side to make someone "important" proud
Chapter 8 quote definitely showed that Jalil wasa child. Cowardice. Guilty. He didn't care. He was immature.
