From a Nursery Rhyme to Gothic Text (855-955)
Intro (5 mins)
Register
LO: Idetifying & employing the key traits of the Gothic genre through converting a Nursery Rhyme into a Gothic text
All to be sitting & reading for 5 mins
Starter (15mins /20)
It is a race to group the terms e.g. "pathetic fallacy & horror" vs "educational & simplistic." Overlaps are possible (tragedy) these can go in the middle.
Stds will need to fill in boxes, writing what they feel defines Gothic Lit and Nursery Rhymes (can google)
They will need to chop these up and then set the game up for other class members. JDCM to time
Team 1 will then have to race Team 2 to seperate what makes a Gothic piece (assessed JDCM to photograph) of lit Vs a nursery rhyme (not as relevant)
Class is divided into team 1 and 2
Group Captains will mark each others'
How far can a story or song develop if based on a simple nursery rhyme (12 mins/32)?
Very interested in the world of Faërie
Very creative & created his "other world"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Kj0P5SdiaY
All inspiration must come from somewhere...nearly all his work was not original!
Tolkien - Anyone know him?
Amongst many other texts, he wrote the "
the man in the moon who stayed up too late
," & "
Roverandom
" These were based on the Nursery Rhyme "Hey-Diddle-Diddle"...the adaptations are amazing.
Let's see it in action!
KLP
: Explain how far a story can go with only minimal input.
The TASK (30 mins/50)
& B) bring all the gothic influeces we have covered into it!
Choose a rhyme or google one!
Now we have to A) extend a nursery rhyme (your choice)
So we have got our creative writing juices going on our last starter lesson (
reflect on how that worked as that starter was for this module
)
Don't worry about it having to actually rhyme!
Jack and Jill Example
. Pull apart the characters...could they be in love..? Will this be a tragic end?..Could this evoke a haunting or dismal landscape to PF the scene?..Could the hill be ghostly?...Does Jack's tragedy mean Jill is left distraught and talking to Ravens
forevermore
?
Now you can use this for your plan or alternatively...does Humpty Dumpty's tragedy take your interest....does the 'Ghost riders' of the Grand old Duke's cavelry send a shiver down your spine?...Be creative (Allen 2006:
"but nothing can be completely original"
)
Project J & J > Use WB to pull ideas > Then show them your : : : version
!
Plenary (10mins/60)
Discuss how challenging it felt
Share the experience with the class..did you feel prepared...was it easier creating than just commenting?
Take your stories and GOTH the pages for display!
