Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports

Unfocused/Inattentive
(Grade 3)The student is easily distracted. He needs frequent redirection and refocusing. He needs frequent restating of instructions. He often appears confused and lost in the assignment. He often fails to finish school work. He also often loses things necessary for tasks.
Tier 1
Explain directions/assignment
Explain the assignment/directions to student using eye contact
Have student repeat the direction or assignment or ask the student questions to check his understanding of the direction or assignment.
Watch the student do the first part of the work and offer help.
Break down assignment
Have student verbally repeat back the parts of an assignment or task.
have the student separate each part or question of the assignment into individual lines, having the student focus on them one at a time
Allow a break after student completes a portion of the work.
Praise when on task
Make praises specific, personalized, and individualized.
Restate praises in different ways to get the point across.
Give student both verbal and physical praise.

Tier 2
Self Monitoring
Self-monitoring check list and chart.
Use pictures, gestures or sound to remind the student he needs to address the behavior.
Have student find the trigger of the distraction and try to avoid it.
Peer Tutoring
Assign a student who has great self-management skills to help the student.
Assign a routine procedure for peer tutoring.
Assign peer tutoring when the student is in group work.
Reward
Reward the student when meeting the expectation.

Tier 3
Individual & Visual Schedules
Give the student visual schedule for routines and timeline for assignments.
Involve the parents in the intervention, send copy of the schedule home.
Remind the student frequently to refer to their schedule when they don’t know what to do.

Poor Peer Relationships
: (Grade 3) The student often conflicts with peers. He often annoys and irritates others. He has trouble getting along in groups or pair work.
Tier 1
Talk one on one with the trouble maker
Remove the student from the classroom immediately when he has conflicts with others and figure out what happened, why the conflict happened and guide him to use the skills to solve the problem.
Teach conflict resolution skills
Teach conflict resolution lessons and interventions for
the whole class or groups.
Paste problem solving poster in the classroom and guide students to use the strategies to solve the problems and conflicts.
Model proper conflict resolution skills for students.
Teach relationship skills
Teach lessons on relationships, friendships, getting along with others, tolerance, etc
Take students aside to discuss and have them reflect on how their behaviors affect others, what behaviors would make others want to be friends with them, etc
Teach relationship skills and interventions for
the whole class or groups.

When students fail to use the taught skills, have them reflect on how they could have handled the situation or conflict and role play it with them.
