Page 53. Chapter 8. "In the mirror, Miriam had her first glimpse of Rasheed: the big, square, ruddy face."
Page 71. Chapter 10. "We have an understanding, then. Now, let me have more of that daal."
Page 71. This quote shows that he viewed her as lower than him. We know this by the use of the words: now, let me have more of that daal.
Page 22. This showed that even though she despised him, she still showed manners. I chose this because it surprise me that she did this.
Page 53. She describes him as not a very attractive person. In other quotes, she makes him seem like he is ignorant.

Page 79- This is a quote by Nana that Mariam is thinking back to. This shows Nana's viewpoint on Jalil's actions. To Mariam, they seemed normal, while to Nana they were made out of selfishness.
Page 104. Chapter 15. "Then he was gone, leaving Mariam to spit out pebbles, blood, and the fragments of two broken molars."
Page 104- This is showing a merciless action made by Rasheed. He made her suffer greatly just for not making the rice as he would like. This shows us how he really acts.
Page 90. Chapter 13. "'You could hear the poor girl's teeth rattling, Hakim she was shivering so hard"'
Page 90- This quote occurred right after Mariam had her first miscarriage. She was devastated. This quote was by a woman who was a bystander when this happened, so we know that it is true not biased. It also shows the pain Mariam went through when this happened.

Chapters 21-30
Chapter 26 "One could not count the moons that shimmer on the her roofs, Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls." (Hosseini 192)
Chapter 29 "'He can have it now,' the girl said. 'My answer is yes."' (Hosseini 216)
Chapter 28. This was a turning point in Laila's life. She finds out that the person she love she most is dead. She is heartbroken. At least, she knows that he didn't just die willingly.
Chapter 26. This is from a poem about Kabul. Babi says this before they leave for Pakistan. This is significant to Laila because that is where she's lived all of her life and she is about to abandon it all.
Chapter 29. Laila at this point in her life realizes that there is no other hope for her in this world if she doesn't marry Rasheed. This makes her give in to him and marry him. Mariam knows that this is the best thing for Laila to do.

Chapter 31."I have no use of your company. I don't want it." (226, Hosseini)
Chapter 32. "This is why the Holy Koran forbids sharab." (228, Hosseini)
Chapter 34 "They sat on folding chairs outside and ate halawa with their fingers from a common bowl." (250, Hosseini)
Chapter 31. This was a quote from Mariam to Laila. This quote is significant because Mariam's attitude changes about Laila in the upcoming chapters. She begins to see her as a sister and she likes her very much.
Chapter 32. This was a quote that shows to the reader that the Koran forbids drinking alcohol. This is very important because it shows us how the Koran works in some areas and it tells us that Rasheed was committing a crime when he was drinking.
Chapter 34. This shows a friendly connection between Mariam and Laila. This was not how their relationship was a couple of chapters ago, it was more hostile and full of hatred.
Chapter 41. "'I swear you're going to make me kill you, Laila,' he said. "Then he stormed out the house." (305,Hosseini).
Chapter 41. "'My children are going to die,' Laila said. 'Right before my eyes.'" (306, Hosseini).
Chapter 42. "'Is Aziza coming home with us this time?' Zalamai said.
'Soon ,my love,' Laila said. 'Soon'" (322, Hosseini).
Chapter 41. This quote shows the aggression by Rasheed. It shows us how relentless he can be, yet with a sense of guilt at the same time.
Chapter 41. This quote shows us the poverty and the feeling of helplessness by Laila. She seems absolutely overtaken by the situation. Later on, Maiam attempts to cheer her up,but she is still feeling helpless.
Chapter 42. We see Zalamai as a person that is more like his dad. In this quote however, he is truly asking when his sister is going to come home with them. This is one of the times that we see him show emotion like this.
Why does Rasheed not want Laila to see Tariq, even though she is still married to Rasheed?

Chapter 15. "Then he was gone, leaving Mariam to spit out pebbles, blood, and the fragments of two broken molars." (104, Hosseini).
Chapter 34 "They sat on folding chairs outside and ate halawa with their fingers from a common bowl." (250, Hosseini)
Chapter 26 "One could not count the moons that shimmer on the her roofs, Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls." (Hosseini, 192)
The book, A Thousand Splendid Suns, was a very well written and a very good advocate of women's rights in the Middle East. I liked this book very much because it truly describes the feeling of hopelessness by Mariam and Laila. It portrays them as women who are fighting for their rights, but are also oppressed. They don't have a platform to speak out from.
When Laila had her third child, was she happy withhaving that child?

Chapter 28 "In the morning, the bed was empty. I asked a nurse. She said he fought valiantly." (Hosseini 209)
