Traditional and dietary needs of different groups of people
Babies
Babies are totally reliant on their parents to provide food.
Babies initially drink only milk, but as they grow they require more energy, so they are weaned onto solid food.
A baby needs essential nutrients for growth and development, energy-dense, filling foods that are easy to swallow.
Food must be hygienic and safe
Parents will want the food to be nutritious, appetising, easy to prepare, without additives, low in sugar and hygienic.
Toddlers/pre-school children
Toddlers grow fast, so they require a lot of energy from their food.
They need a balanced diet that contains a high proportion of complex carbohydrates to provide this energy
They should have the following portions per day:
Five portions of fruit and vegetables
Five portions of starchy foods
-Three portions of dairy foods
Two to three portions of protein foods
The foods must be:
Easy to hold
Available and suitably-sized portions
Interesting shapes colours, textures and flavours
School-aged children
School-aged children are still reliant on parents for the food they eat
They need products that meet current dietary guidelines on healthy eating while providing filling food, particularly for packed lunches.
School-aged children should eat a varied, balanced diet which is based on the Eatwell guide.
They should regularly take part in physical activity so that they have a healthy body weight.
Adolescents
Adolescents, particularly boys, need energy-dense foods from complex carbohydrates.
Girls require foods that are rich in iron to replace the iron lost during menstruation.
Food that is rich in calcium and phosphorus prevents rickets and osteoporosis later in life.
Adults
Adults needs vary depending on their lifestyle and occupation.
Energy requirements are lower than that of teenagers.
The requirements for protein and most vitamins & minerals are similar or stay the same.
Adults should base their diet on the Eatwell Guide.
Older people
Many live on a limited income
They need a balanced diet based on the Eatwell Guide.
Prefer appetising products in smaller quantities
Easy to prepare, nutritional meals with easy to open packaging.
