70-year-old female has pneumonia
Woman has fast, shallow breathing and a wet, wheezy cough due to fluid buildup in lungs from not exchanging air because of high altitude; is diagnosed with a viral infection of the lungs
Woman begins having difficulty breathing; she may have acquired an infection while traveling due to her age or weak immune system; makes a trip to the Emergency Room and is admitted for observation.
Woman retires from her job in Fort Worth, Texas and travels/moves to Denver, Colorado to live closer to her daughter
Respiratory System
Anatomy
Lungs
spongy, air-filled; paired composite organs that flank mediastinum in thorax
composed of
respiratory passageways
alveoli
microscopic chambers at at termini of bronchi tree
simple squamous ET
external surfaces are intimately associated with pulmonary capillaries
special alveolar cells produce surfactant
alveolar ducts
simple squamous ET
Bronchial Tree
right and left main bronchi
lobar and segmental bronchi and bronchioles
bronchiolar walls
smooth muscle
stroma
fibrous elastic CT
Upper Respiratory
Nose
Nasal Cavity
Pharynx
Lower Repiratory
Larynx
Trachea
Physiology
alveoli
main site of gas exchange
reduces surface tension; helps prevent lung collapse
alveolar ducts
gas exchange
Lungs
house respiratory passages smaller than main bronchi
Bronchial Tree
air passageways connecting trachea with alveoli; cleans, warms, and moistens incoming air
Bronchi & Bronchioles
Conducts air
Larynx & Trachea
conducts air
due to high altitude and pressure change, less gas exchange has occurred resulting in a decrease of Oxygen. (Boyle's Law: Pressure & Volume are inversely related)
compromised heart and other organs due to excess stress from pressure change (eg. kidneys, arteries, lungs)
chest pain; Myocardial Infarction
Death
Inflammation of air sacs; fluid in the lungs
fever
chills
difficulty breathing; shortness of breath
dizziness due to her age
falling/injury
Increased heart rate
treatment
if left untreated
could end up on a ventilator
increased risk of blood clots due to bed rest
steroids & bronchodilators; possible antibiotic therapy
