questions

Do you think Nana isn't fond of Jalil because of what her own father did to her when she was younger?
-
quotes
"Nana said, 'Learn this now and learn it well, my daughter: Like a compass needle that points north, a man's accusing finger always finds a woman . Always. You remember that Mariam.'"
Chapter 1, Page 7
"But Mariams favorite, other than Jalil of course, was Mullah Faizullah, the elderly village Korean tutor, its akhund." Chapter 3, Page 16
"Mariam would listren doubtfully to this. She never dared say to Nana how much she disliked her talking this way about Jalil."
Chapter 1, Page 5
reflections
I think that Nana is teaching Mariam this because she wants to show her what is good and what is bad. Nana is showing Mariam what to look for so she doesn't go through what Nana and what Mariam is going through.
I think Mariam likes the people that help or give to her the most. For instance, she likes her dad and she likes her tutor and they both help and give to her in some way or another.
I think Jalil and Mariam are super close. I think that her father
only coming see her every Thursday is what makes them close.
But, I don't think that Nana is very fond of Jalil, I think she would rather him not be around Mariam or anyone.
chapter 11 - 20
quotes
"Some days, she believed that the baby had been an undeserved blessing, that she was being punished for what she had done to Nana."
"His powerful hands clasped her jaw. He shoved two fingers into her mouth and pried it open, then forced the cold, hard pebbles into it." Chapter 15, Page 104
"'What if it's a girl?' Mariam said." Chapter 13, Page 86
questions
-
Do you think Rasheed had an idea that Mariam was gonna leave so he got her pregnant to keep her longer?
-
reflections
I think Mariam is having doubts about leaving her old home. Also I think that Rasheed is going to do the same thing Jalil did to Nana, and then I think Mariam will feel even worse because she didn't listen to Nana about men.
I thought that Mariam would run away before anything like that happened but now that it happened I think she would be too scared to even try.
What if Rasheed got her pregnant to keep her with him longer because he had a feeling she would run or leave him.
chapter 31 - 40
quotes
"That night, Mariam was lying in bed when the bickering started again." Hossieni, 238
"Mariam watched as the girl's days became consumed with cycles of feeding, rocking, bouncing, walking." Hosseini, 238
"Laila had gone to the kitchen and found Mariam yanking drawers and slamming them shut." ... "'Where did you put it?' she said, wheeling around to face Laila." Hosseini, 232

Why is Mariam so jealous when she knows the culture over there is for the husbands to have multiple wives?
reflections
I feel like Mariam's always going to complain as long as she is Rasheed is her husband. I honestly think that she hates her life, I think she would rather be back to where her dad lives.
I would have thought that Mariam would help with Laila's baby because she is unable to have her own but I guess that's not the case.
I think that Mariam is mean to Laila because she's jealous that Rasheed and Laila got married. I think Laila being able to have babies also contributes to the fact that shes jealous.
chapter 21 - 30
quotes
"'I miss the boys too, you know' Babi said."
Hossieni, 148
"And, with that, she lay down again and pulled up the blanket."
Hosseini, 152
"They had overshadowed her in life"
Hosseini, 142
questions
-
When the brothers come home, will Mammy really forget about and show no attention to Laila?
-
reflections
I think all of Lailas friends try to agree with the things she says to try and keep her strong. I also think that they try not to talk about the boys because they know it will make her sad.
I though she would be happy throughout that whole conversation because her "whole world" is coming back to her, but the fact she didn't barely care kind of confused me.
If I was a 15 year old and I knew that my mother had no love for me but had all the love for my brothers that weren't even around, would make me feel so horrible about myself.
chapter 40 - 51
reflections
I think Laila realized that what he had just found out startled him. I think she finally realized that he understood what was going on.
I'm so happy someone in the book finally took matters into there own hands and did something to stop Rasheed. If Mariam hadn't killed him, the abuse would have just kept on going on.
I think that when his mother almost died that was a coming of age moment. He knew he had to finally grow up and put matters into his own hands.
quotes
"Laila saw hesitation and uncertainty in his eyes now, as if he had just realized that what he's disclosed had turned out to be far bigger than he'd thought." Hosseini, 341
"And, with that, Mariam brought down the shovel. This time, she gave it everything she had." Hosseini, 349
"He made a vow to himself, Tariq said, after his mothers illness, that they would not spend another winter in camp. He'd work save, move them to an apartment in Peshawar with heating and clean water." Hosseini, 335 & 336
questions
Do you think that because things started to piece together that the whole central theme is changing as well?

What do you think Mariam thought when she was going through all of this, because she couldn't let her emotions out to him cause he would most likely kill her?
If Mariam and Laila would have left Rasheed, what do you think would have happened?
reflections
This quote really made what I thought of Rasheed show. The fact that she had to live with that, I don't know how she didn't leave.
I think that before Mariam had realized that Laila wasn't being treated any different than she was by Rasheed she started liking her more. But, I think she thought that just because she was able to get pregnant she would be treated better, but she wasn't.
This quote made me happy, it was one part of the book I liked. I think that this quote said that Mariam and Liala finally took matters into there own hands and tied the book together. They finally took back the life they had once lived.
final reflection
Honestly, I didn't LOVE the book, it was alright. My type of book is romance, but I liked the book because you never really knew what was going to happen, it was all kind of a surprise to me.
