  - - - Is the amount of control Rasheed intends to have over Mariam normal in that society? What about their society gives them the affirmation of their beliefs when it comes to the ownership they have over women?
      - How do people live with this little control over their own lives? How do they function without being in constant despair?
      - Why do people insist on shirking blame for their misdeeds, like abandoning a child because you did something wrong, or acting like you are being wronged when you marry off a 15-year-old?
  - - - The first quote acted as a sort of turning point in the story, the suicide of Nana was the last thing before being married off to push Mariam over the edge into despair. She had finally lost the last thing she held on to, her mother.
      - The third quote signifies the impersonality of marriage in their society. It does this through the sheer fact that she has never seen the face of her husband until she has already said her "I dos". The man who will have total say over her life from now on and she hasn't spoken to him once before they were married.
      - The second quote points out the absolute hypocrisy of the standards set before. It showcases this through the implication that she is being married off because she is not wanted, something confirmed later in the chapter. Specifically with the last sentence which lays out the hypocrisy point blank.
